What  Do We Do?
WHAT DO WE DO

The Friends was established in 1993 to provide support in the National Park Service staff in whatever form and by whatever means will best service the purpose of the organization and the park. Thus, in actual work done by the Friends changes as the needs of the park changes, We would like to think of of selves as flexible!  "Volunteers in the park" (VIP)  program. As such they are protected as employees under the Workman's Compensation and the Federal Tort Claims Act.

Here are some of the projects we have completed or are planning:

TRAIL BUILDING:

Traditionally a group of gathers for a weekend of trail building activities. We are careful tp provide a full range of work activities to fit the varying capabilities of our members.  Group dinners and camping are part of this tradition.

ADOPT-A-TRAIL/BOUNDARY

Friends adopt a portion of the parks trial and/or boundary system, either as individuals or as groups. Duties include minor trail maintenance litter patrol , sign inventory, photography, reporting conditions to park staff, and public contact.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The park staff is always in need of more and better photography for any number of purposes. Friends having photographic skills can enjoy their hobby and provide a valuable service at the same time.

SPECIAL EVENTS

The most notable to date was the celebration of the parks 100th birthday. Friends spent years organizing and promoting this great event, During the Centennial Events itself, Friends served as hosts and provided staff support. Friends will continue to be involved in future events both large and small.

RESOURCE PROJECTS

Many Friends  are particularly interested in participating in protecting the parks natural resources. Friends have assisted park staff in rare plant research projects and in eradication of exotic, invasive plants. More projects of the natural are planed.

MAINTENANCE PROJECTS

Some of the Friends have very useful skills in the building and construction trade We have built bridges and other structures.

WINTER DESK DUTY

Friends participate in actively manning the winter desk above the cafe located at the Rim  Village. We assist winter visitors, hand out newsletters and  answer visitor concerns and questions.
