Project Work Weekend 2010

AUGUST 20-22, 2010

Come join the Friends of Crater Lake for a fun filled weekend of camping, food, and meaningful work to help Crater Lake National Park. There will be free entrance to the park and free campsites at Mazama for those participating. Evening meals are provided by the Friends. Provide your own breakfast and lunch. You may opt not to camp, and only work and join us for the evening meal..

The project this year will be somewhat a repeat of last year, in that we will again power wash the campground amphitheater so that park visitors will have nice clean benches to sit on for the evening programs. We will also paint another signpost, this time at the west entrance to the park. It is peeling and badly in need of paint. There may very well be other tasks added.

There will also be a more or less sedentary task for 2 people per day at the Community House. We are participating in a Pilot Project to show videos to park visitors during the day at this location. This task would involve setting up chairs and turning a projector on and off and announcing the topic of the film. There may be questions to answer, but in depth knowledge can be found at the Rim Visitor Center across the road, so the person filling this job need only know basics like where the restrooms are, etc. (This project will be on-going during the entire month of August and weekends only during September for those interested but not able to come for Project Weekend.)

Bring work clothes, gloves, suntan lotion, and mosquito repellent. Please RSVP soon so we know how many campsites to reserve and how much food to buy.

Amphibian BioBlitz at Crater Lake National Park

The Crater Lake National Park Science and Learning Center is sponsoring a
survey and inventory of Crater Lake’s amphibians on Saturday, July 24, 2010
from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.  This Amphibian BioBlitz is an opportunity for
“citizen scientists” from the general public to join park staff and other
scientists to characterize the biological and genetic diversity of
amphibians occupying the Crater Lake landscape.  Participants will work in
small teams led by regional experts and university students and will learn
how to safely sample, handle, and identify amphibians in their natural
habitats.

The Science and Learning Center will also offer a public seminar with
presentations delivered by participating scientists on the evening before
the BioBlitz.  These presentations are an opportunity for park visitors and
staff to learn more about amphibians in the Pacific Northwest.

Participants must be adults (over 18) or children over 12 accompanied by
their parent or legal guardian.  Registrants can select terrain preferences
based on different physical abilities, but some hiking off trail is
expected.  More information will be provided upon registration.  All
participants must pre-register by Friday, June 25, 2010.  To obtain
registration forms, contact Andrew Ray or Linda
Hilligoss

The Crater Lake Science and Learning Center provides research and
educational opportunities to promote the understanding, appreciation, and
stewardship of our Nation’s natural and cultural heritage.  It is funded
through an endowment from the Oregon Community Foundation made possible
from the sale of the Oregon Crater Lake commemorative license plates.
