About the Hartell Internship

LESLIE JEHNINGS - 1ST HARTELL INTERN

In 2007 Leslie Jehnings was hired by the NPS as the first Hartell intern to do some planning for the Watchman Lookout.  She did a preservation plan that is aimed at the future, for when funding and/or volunteer labor might become available.  She also has background in making facilities accessible, so she did a site plan for rehabilitating the Watchman Overlook or “Corrals”, since it is the trailhead for the lookout.  She came back in 2008 to do site plans for North Junction, Cleetwood Cove parking area, and the Sun Notch trail and parking area.  (More detailed information can be found in Steve Mark’s article in the Winter 2009 issue of the Friends newsletter.  See the newsletter section of the Friends website .)  The following web pages describe her work during the summer of 2007.

During the summer of 2008, the 2nd Hartell intern, Abby Glanville, provided guidelines for future stonework in the park.  She did a detailed inventory of all types of stonework at Crater Lake including an interactive Powerpoint map, several hundred photos, and detailed treatment recommendations.  Her guide will be coming out soon in printed format.  If interested in a copy, contact Steve Mark, Park Historian (steve_mark@nps.gov).

There are plans to have a 3rd intern during the summer of 2009.
